Choosing Between Funeral Homes

Help With Funeral Homes - Selecting The Right Funeral Home

Back in 1984 a consumer legislation was passed by congress that helps protect you when you are looking at prospective funeral homes. The Funeral Rule Legislation (as it is called) underwent a revision in 1994. The important issues that were covered in the legislation is as follows:

Funeral homes have to provide their customers with a "General Price List" (GPL for short) that covers the fees of every service that they offer. Should you want a copy from them be sure to ask for it as they have to give potential customers a copy upon request.

Funeral homes have to make available to you a price list of their caskets, urns, and outer containers; However their is no requirement that they give customers a copy of their casket prices, as they just need to show the prices. Reputable funeral homes will provide a copy of their casket prices.

Funeral Homes can not make any claims on caskets such as "Sealing", "Protective", or "Gasketed" such as giving the impression that rubber seals on a casket helps to preserve the remains. This is a very widely used Scam in the funeral home industry, do not fall into this trap.

A casket is not required for cremation, sometimes funeral homes will only present you with options for a casket. Keep in mind you do have other options for containers.

Funeral homes must let the customer provide their own casket (bought from someone else) if you wish and they are not allowed to charge a special handling fee to do so.

Be mindful of these points when visiting a funeral home.
